For the past two years, I made a point to try and watch thirty-one horror movies in the months of October and March. Why? Because it was fun! Sure, I never got to thirty-one days. But I did get to watch some pretty great horror films!

Unfortunately, while I would love to try and do another month of fun new horror films this year, I am not going to try to put anything together. I am way too busy with work and writing to put together a whole month of movies again.

But I did enjoy the months I did put together, and all of the movies I got to watch. So, here is a bit of a recap of the previous months.

In four months (spread out over two years,) I watched a total of 43 horror movies (along with two rewatches,) two tv shows, and a horror comedy musical. But out of those forty-eight watch-throughs, I didn’t finish Bloody Hell or The Sadness. I did four recap posts in total, and the farther I got in a month was twenty-one movies.

As the ranking goes, my current top ten horror movies from all four months combined are currently:

  1. Scream VI
  2. Dog Soldiers
  3. Train to Busan
  4. Alien
  5. Nerdy Prudes Must Die
  6. Ginger Snaps
  7. Slotherhouse
  8. Superhost
  9. Saw
  10. Jennifer’s Body

I am mostly happy with how this turned out. Because these movies are pretty great. Movies like Dog Soldiers, Alien, Saw, and Ginger Snaps are just all around great and chilling movies. Slotherhouse and Superhost are more modern and have good humor to them, even if at times they’re a bit absurd. And the others were generally enjoyable. However, it is safe to say, that if I had to pick my favorite watches, this list would be quite different.

It would be a lot harder to pick and rank them from one to ten based on how much I liked them.

Like it would look like something like this. In no particular order.

  • Ginger Snaps
  • Dog Soldiers
  • Train To Busan
  • Scream VI
  • The Cleansing Hour
  • Deadstream
  • Slotherhouse
  • The Midnight Club
  • The Menu
  • Slotherhouse

My ranking system for these movies was based on like certain aspects of each film that I enjoyed, such as characterization or story. Or even just like how much I liked the media. Some of the things I watched were better than others, and some of my opinions of these films/shows surprised me.

The ranking system doesn’t matter as much as the experience of trying new forms of horror. I came into these months, and yeah. I found three or four movies I thought were okay or underwhemling. But I found so many others that I loved! Points didn’t even matter for these, because I just thought they were a good time.

And some of these were recommended to me! Like the Furry Writer’s Guild folks on Telegram recommended I watch Dog Soliders. I said it before, and I will say it again. Furries don’t mess around!

If I had to personally recommend only ten movies from my list of 40+ films/shows, I would stick to these ten. And I will tell you why. I picked these with a more general audience in mind. Like things I think people I know (who read this blog) might enjoy.

  1. Dog Soldiers: As I said, this was reccommended to me by furry writers. There’s a good reason for this. This movie features a squad of soldiers, that are on a training mission, when they come across a large amount of bloodshed and a werewolf. It has a great story, strong characters, and practical effects and gore that are absolutely stunning. And Cooper is one of my favorite male horror leads.
  2. Death Drop Gorgeous: This movie is a queer, campy, fun endeavor that really won me as I watched the movie and learned about the crew behind it. Monster Makeup really hit a homerun with this film, and I try to reccommend it as often as I can. Don’t go into this movie expecting a serious slasher. It’s about a gay bartender and an aging drag queen trying to navigate a city’s nightlife, while a serial killer is on the loose and draining twinks of their blood. It’s fun, it’s queer, it’s quite gorey and it is ALL a movie one should experience for themselves. It has two of my favorite leads in Dwayne and Gloria Hole. (Dwayne’s actor used to follow me on my twitter before I deactivated.)
  3. Deadstream: Found footage horror made its way into my heart with this one. It follows a formerly canceled Youtuber who tries to earn his fanbase back by going to spend a night locked in a haunted house. This is a horror comedy, in which the balance between them is so good. There were times where the more comedic aspects were highlighted the most. But those scary scenes.
  4. Vampires vs The Bronx: This movie was the first I watched when I started this horror watching/documenting journey. And it really hooked me on the idea of doing this more. It features three tweens/teens that discover that vampires have infiltrated the Bronx and are trying to drive locals away. I feel like this is a good gateway movie into horror comedy, especially with how young the stars are. Plus! There’s a Chris Redd cameo. I love Chris Redd cameos.
  5. Scare Me: Speaking of Chris Redd cameos, Scare Me is a very unique take on a horror film. It’s led and directed by Dropout (Formerly Collegehumor) cast member, Josh Ruben. It features two authors who are snowed in during a power outage, and they decide to tell each other scary stories. Now where other movies would cut to other characters acting out the story, this movie features the storyteller acting it out on screen as they tell the story. (AND YES. Chris Redd has a delightful amount of screentime in this movie.)
  6. Train to Busan: Night of the Living Dead is a classic (and you should totally watch that as well.) But I felt that Train to Busan was a more intense and wonderful story. This story follows a group of passengers who have to survive zombies on a train. That’s the jist, but there is so much more. Every character we meet and get to know is so well protrayed and makes it very clear the kind of person they are. There’s character development, very intense moments, zombie kills, and quite a few tears to be had. This Korean zombie film is where it’s at.
  7. The Midnight Club: Mike Flanagan’s shows are all really really good in my eyes. But Midnight Club is my favorite. It’s lead by a young cast, alongside horror veteran Heather Langenkamp (best known as Nancy in Nightmare on Elm Street.) It features a group of young adults in a nursing home, where each seems to be at the end of their ropes health-wise unless there’s a miracle. The setting seems to have a mysterious past that makes a newcomer think that there may be a way to cure her cancer. And one of the coolest parts of the show is that each night, the patients get together and tell each other scary stories. This show also made me cry. Just an FYI.
  8. Ginger Snaps: When I first watched this movie, I immediately was able to notice all of the similarities it had to Jennifer’s Body. This movie, however is much better in my opinion. Something about the main characters being obsessed with death, until one becomes a “bringer” of it was a good story to watch. The practical effects were also pretty good, and the story was equally as such. I also really liked that the side characters had a little more story to them all. Werewolves are cool.
  9. Glorious: My first cosmic horror film and the deciding factors in me watching it were the glory hole, and the fact that the entity is voiced by J.K Simmons. Do yourselves a favor and go into this blind. Trust me. This one is a bit more rough.
  10. The Menu: This movie is about a group of wealthy folks who go to a chef’s private restuarant island for an exclusive eating experience. And they find out their all going to die at the end of the dinner. It’s a pretty good concept, with some really good commentary. It has a stacked cast of Anya Taylor Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Ralph Fiennes, as well as others. If you want to see an angry chef who’s mad at the rich for taking the fun out of his art, watch this movie.

I hope that you all enjoyed this post.
