Prom Queen is the newest entry into the Fear Street Netflix series, and it’s a bit of a departure from the original series in that it’s just one standalone movie that takes place amidst/separate to the story of the trilogy. I had some free time today, thanks to getting my wisdom teeth out. So I took some time to watch this new slasher flick from the Fear Street series.
Prom Queen released on Netflix May 23rd and was directed by Matt Palmer who also wrote the movie with Donald McLeary. The movie features India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, Chris Klen, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, Katherine Waterston, and Ariana Greenblatt.
The movie returns the viewer to Shadyside 1988 and follows six prom queen hopefuls as they get ready for the ever so important Prom Night. And as you would believe it, this is a horror movie. And the prom court starts to get picked off one by one.
As this is a recent release, I don’t intend on sharing any details on this film. No spoilers from this chee! 😀
I will however, give my thoughts.
Starting with the negatives. I didn’t really see too much wrong with it. There was some dialogue that seemed to be out of place in the eighties, which is kind of important to an 80’s slasher. I also do think in certain aspects, it doesn’t quite match the storytelling that the prior movies did. This one was a bit faster in pace, and a certain plot point didn’t really get as much detail as it deserved.
That being said, I still loved this movie. I thought the story was pretty gripping, and the twists of it all weren’t too easy to sniff out (I love it when a mystery isn’t too easy to figure out.) Even when I thought I knew what was going on, the movie’s plot surprised me. And like the prior films, this one had a few of standout characters that I fell in love with almost immediately. My favorite this time around is the main character’s best friend Megan, played by Suzanna Son.
As far my own personal rating of the movie, I’d have to give it an 8/10. I enjoyed it quite a bit more than I did Part Two of the trilogy. The blood and gore of the kills were pretty creative, but not too over the top. I’d highly recommend giving it a watch, whether you’re planning to watch the series as a whole or just a one-off horror watch.
If you watch it, let me know what you think! Are there any other movies you think I’d enjoy? Or hate? Or both?
