I have been a casual watcher of WWE over the past two years or so, in that I’ll watch the fights on youtube/follow the storylines from NXT from time to time.
I don’t really know how to feel about the larger company of WWE overall, like with certain creative choices (bringing back a man who is part of an active lawsuit) or the way that certain individuals in the company unashamedly support a certain tangerine political figure. It’s one of the reasons I only follow it from a distance.
But the wrestlers themselves are so fantastic in my opinion. John Cena just finished his career earlier this month, and he looked so happy. I really like to see someone who just loves what he does so much.
That being said, I’d love to share my general thoughts on the WWE and storylines just as someone who’s a bit of a novice fan.
- I am so happy with these midcard title scenes right now.
- Chelsea Green (Our First and Current Reigning US Champion) is such an entertaining character, and a good physical performer. And like you can tell she enjoys playing this heel-type character.
- Maxxine Dupri as the IC Champion feels so right. She’s the underdog who took down Becky Lynch and she’s been working her ass off with Natty. It really shows. And I am glad to see WWE utilizing her.
- The Men’s US scene has been absolute gold since Sami Zayn won the title off of Solo. The Open Challenge has been absolutely amazing almost every week and has been able to show off so much talent from superstars who have been under-utilized for so long. And it has been making every participant look amazing. Ilya Dragunov then took the Open Challenges and elevated them to such an intense level. Like seriously… is he okay? Physically?
- And then there’s Dominic Mysterio. This one hasn’t been keeping my attention like the others, but there’s a lot of potential here. He’s currently holding the Men’s IC title and the AAA Mega Championship. I don’t know what to expect here.
- There’s only one main card championship I really care about right now, and it’s CM Punk’s Heavyweight Championship. I am hoping that the match he has coming up with Bron Breakker is fire. Would I like to see Bron as the new Heavyweight Champ? Yeah, I do think I would. I think the women’s maincard titles have a lot of potential, but I do not see Jade or Stephanie losing their titles anytime soon.
- Logan Paul doesn’t belong in WWE. Sure, he’s a good physical performer. But he’s a horrible person, and the way he talks about/to other talent is really just not it.
- They’ve been edging us on a (new) Judgment Day split for almost two years. Finn Balor, what the hell are you doing man? Make the move! As much as I don’t think it’s the best idea for the most loved heel to become a face, I do think that they need to make this split happen. Like seriously.
- The company is great at booking solid heel turns. But like… I am not sure what it all was for in the end.
- My biggest example of my thoughts in this department are concerning The New Day. Them turning on Big E was so vicious, even more so because neither laid a finger on the man. But there hasn’t really been much coming from this. Like, they’re still doing stuff on the roster in the tag division. But now they feel like the same as usual, but in a more heel way. (Don’t get me wrong, I love that they’re getting up in arms about Becky losing the IC title to Maxxine.)
- They turned Wes Lee heel, only for him to go back to TNA within a year.
- The most interesting heel this year has been Naomi. And that story was so well executed. Her settling beef with Jade, setting up for a future confrontation with Bianca, her winning Money-In-The-Bank and cashing in where you’d least expect. I hope she’s doing well with her pregnancy and all, because I cannot wait to see more of her.
- (That being said, I have my eyes on the Tatum Paxley and Izzi Dame fued. Reeeeally curious to see how this goes.)
- Jade Cargill is one of my top five favorite wrestlers’ period, based on physicality alone. She’s such a good presence, and I loved watching her absolutely rule the tag division for as long as she did. Her part in the Naomi heel turn was one of my favorite things to follow. Her (valid) crash out during Elimination Chamber on Naomi was perfection. They’re utilizing her so well as a heel right now. I hope that they book her well as the Champion.
- I love Joe Hendry so much. His gimmick of appearing when his name is said is just the funniest shit. I think he should stick with working between NXT and TNA though. He’s a good wrestler, and I think with WWE: Main Roster, they’ll take the gimmick and they will use it more than they will show off his wrestling skills.
- I am so so so very glad I was able to see AJ Lee come back. It’s been so cool to see all of these faces from the last decade reappear and continue their work in the company. Like AJ fighting Becky, or Nicki Bella getting back into the singles scene. I have done the AJ Lee skip at work. And I am 250 pounds of androgyny, so I look so silly.
That’s all for now. ^-^ Hope everyone has been having a good new year so far!
