I have watched so many horror movies on Tubi over the last week, as of 1/28/26 when I am writing this post. There have been some hits, some misses, and some right in the middle. But it’s been pretty fun so far.
Most of these movies seem like independent projects, which means that most of the casts and crews are probably people that know and love horror. And that’s always really nice to see.
In the last post, I talked about the movie Alpine Lake. Today, I am talking about The Cabining.
The Cabining (released on May 3rd, 2014) is a horror comedy directed by Steve Kopera and stars Mike Kopera, Melissa Mars, Bo Keister, and Angela Relucio. It follows two writers, Todd and Bruce, who head to a remote artist’s retreat so they can write the perfect horror movie script. (And make enough money to pay their rent.) But after they arrive, they find the perfect inspiration when other artists start getting picked off in gruesome ways.
This movie was mostly a delight! I thought it was very lighthearted and silly, but it was the funniest in the last like… thirty minutes of the movie. The acting was decent for most of the characters, and the movie itself just looks like it was so fun to make. (And it has the blooper reel in the credits! I miss when movies did that!)
I wrote down a few notes while I watched this one. I did find one of the two main characters, Bruce, to be a little annoying. But I also feel like that was the point, so I didn’t let it bother me too much. He did have some dialogue that made me tilt my head and narrow my eyes. >.> I did absolutely love Mindy and Todd. They just had such good chemistry and the dynamic was there. As was the sexual tension. Ooooo.
The characters in this one were pretty strong, especially the main four. And the others just contributed so much to the comedy. With a police officer who disappears slowly off screen after one or two lines of dialouge while other characters question where they’re going. An obviously suspicious guy showing up with weapon-like art pieces that get more and more absurd. Things like that made the movie just so so very fun.
I honestly didn’t write too many notes with this movie. I had so much fun watching it, and I didn’t remember that I was taking notes till the very end. But I was pretty hooked on it. It had the humor, it had the bodies, it had quite a bit of blood, and there was some sexiness to it. I also really liked the subversion that came from a twist in the end of the film.
All in all, I lifted this movie from the 7/10 I originally gave it to a 7.5/10. Not only would I watch it again, but I’d say if you’re looking for a fun and stupidly silly watch, The Cabining may be up your alley. Give it a looksie.
